3 Things to Consider When You Use Patterned Carpet

Choose between bold or subtle

Using patterned carpets can open up decorating opportunities and add a contemporary feel, instantly lifting a room. Be bold with pinstripes, plaids, even chevron stripes, for maximum impact. For a more subtle approach, look at less dominant details with the same shade that work in conjunction with the room. Source: IdealHome

Don’t forget to consider the size of your room

If you choose to have a pattern on your carpet or area rug, make sure that the size of the pattern is scaled appropriately to the size of the room. The typical rule of thumb is larger patterns for larger rooms; however, this rule is not written in stone and depends more on the amount of visible floor space. For example, a small room that does not have a lot of furniture can handle a larger pattern, while a large area that is crammed with furniture may require a smaller pattern. Your floor covering is an important component of your room’s décor, and can have a big impact on the overall feel of the room. Make sure your pattern matches

One thing that you will have to consider when looking at patterned carpet is the pattern match of the carpet. A pattern match allows you to match up the pattern exactly where you have a seam in the carpet. Each carpet will have a different length and width match that you have to abide by if you want it to look good. Otherwise, your pattern will not match up and you will be able to notice a difference in the two pieces of carpet. As a result of this pattern match, you should expect to buy more carpet. If you are dealing a whole house in carpet, you should expect to buy considerably more because of the pattern match. Buying an extra 20 to 30% because of the pattern match is not out of the question. Therefore, if someone from the carpet store measures your house and tells you that you have to buy more carpet than what you thought, do not be surprised. Source: DoItYourself
