(4) TESTERS WANTED: Mizuno ST 180 Drivers

Mention Mizuno irons to any avid golfer, and you'll get a twinkled eye, a quickened pulse, and heart palpitations. We act like a teen who's just discovered Baywatch reruns on Hulu.

Mention Mizuno drivers and you're likely to get a blank stare and a furrowed brow - sort of like a teenager who's been asked about his grades.

Under the radar doesn't begin to describe Mizzy's presence in the driver category. But if you put any stock into MyGolfSpy's Most Wanted Driver testing, it's clear Mizuno has kicked the door down and is joining the party.

The Mizuno ST 180 was one of the surprise performers in this year's Most Wanted, finishing 4th overall and first in carry distance. When we dial in swing speed, the ST 180's performance is even more attention-getting: tied for 2nd for swing speeds over 105, and tied for first overall for 90-to-105 swing speeds.

Mizuno bills the ST 180 as a low-spinning bomber with a forged SP700 Titanium face and a Wave Sole that gives the face a little extra flex. It performed well for us, but now it's time to find out how it performs for the golfers that really count.

PING Announces the PLD3 Limited Edition Mallet

New From PING: The PING Putting Lab Design 3

Fresh out of the putter labs at PING HQ comes the latest release in their PLD line, the PLD3 mallet. Savvy putter watchers will remember this putter from a few months back when PING staffer Corey Conners had it in his bag at the Valspar Open.

Well, as of today you can put the PLD3 in your bag as well.

The PLD3 represents the third release in the PING Putting Lab Design line. Just to refresh, the PLD1 was the designed-online-by-you Anser, and the PLD2 was the Ketsch that featured the Realtree camouflage finish. Both of these putters pushed the design envelope beyond the normal versions of those putters, making for some truly unique limited edition offerings.

PING has kept that something extra design theme going with the PLD3, once again unveiling a pretty amazing finish.

Torched Copper Sole Plate

Every sole plate design on the PLD3 is a work of art, made here at PING, which speaks to the exclusivity and one-of-a-kind appeal of the PLD program. Using an open-flame torch, we put each sole plate through a multi-stage heating and cooling process that brings out the natural, living patina colors and unique patterns.

As with the camouflaged PLD2, the story of the PLD3 is all about the finish. PING has taken a torch to the bottom of these putters and produced unique patterns of colors and patinas. PING is of course not the first to offer torched finishes, lots of small companies have been doing that for years, but I think that this is the first time that a large golf company has offered a torched finish in a large release (aka more than a one-off).

It's not just boring torched steel either; it's torched copper.

As far as the other information about the putter, it's primarily made of precision-milled aluminum, the black finish is anodized and as such should wear quite well. It can be used in the kitchen to mash potatoes. Kidding, or am I?

Though I don't have in hand photos yet to support my speculation, I bet that the black shaft and the black PP58 grip will also make this stick look pretty amazing.

First Look – Srixon Z585 & Z785 Irons

Earlier this week we showed you the USGA photos of the upcoming Z585 and Z785 Drivers. New entries on the conforming groove list suggest the company is also gearing up to replace the 2-seasons-old Z585 and Z785 irons.

The more game-improvement styled Z585 looks to have a touch of bling added to the cavity badge, while the overall shape appears similar to the previous version. Why mess with a good thing, right?

Changes to the 785 also appear subtle, and that's not a bad thing. The Srixon Z65 series has been incredibly popular with our readers as well as members of the MyGolfSpy staff. The sole design works, and we certainly don't expect any major changes there.

More information on the new Z-Series as well as new RTX wedges from Cleveland is expected later this summer.

First Look – PING Forged Tour Irons & GLIDE Forged Wedges

PING's release cycles are among the most predictably reliable in the golf equipment world, and the calendar tells us that both iBlade and the GLIDE 2.0 wedge are up next for updating.

Given that, it's anything but a surprise to see that replacements for both models have either found their way to the USGA's conforming groove list, or - in the case of the wedge - into Bubba Watson's bag.

What is surprising is that both new clubs are forged. To the best of our recollection, PING hasn't released a forged iron since Anser. PING's R&D team has consistently told us that they'd only forge a club when they believe forging will allow them to make a better product?

Is that the case here? PING isn't talking yet, but we're definitely looking forward to hearing more about the Forged Tour iron.

Photos of the GLIDE Forged Wedge come to us via a tweet from PGA Tour's Jonathan Wall. PING has been doing quite a bit of internal testing in the wedge space of late, but my suspicion - based on nothing but a hunch - is that the GLIDE Forged will prove to be a line extension rather than a direct replacement for the GLIDE 2.0.

As with the new irons, we'll have to wait until PING is ready to talk to get the full story.

If PING's pattern holds, full details for both new clubs should emerge sometime between mid-July and early August.
